Archives

In addition to its general collection and special collections, the Catawba College Library maintains Archives for Catawba College. In 2005, the library completed an Archives Preservation Project, and continues to investigate means to improve organization and access to its various collections. Details about each of the Archive collections are provided below.

Materials from the archives may only be used inside the library. Because of lack of space and limited staff, access to the archives must be arranged by appointment. Persons wanting access to the archives (for example, those doing historical and/or geneological research) may contact Jacquelyn Sims at (704)637-4379 or jsims@catawba.edu to arrange for an appointment or to get additional information about the archives.

Donations to the Archives and Special Collections are subject to the library's donation policy.

The Catawba College Collection

Catawba College CollectionCatawba College was founded in Newton, NC in 1851. The leaders in the North Carolina Classis of the Reformed Church in the United States wanted "a college of our own" so that young men would not have to be sent north for ministerial training.

The college moved to its current location in Salisbury, NC in 1925.

The Catawba College Library is the repository for college archival records.

Collection Detail

The Catawba College Collection includes:

  • Histories and accounts of inaugurations of some of the presidents
  • Trustee Reports
  • Departmental records, programs and journals
  • The College catalog / bulletin
  • College newspapers
  • Records of early student organizations such as the Philomathean and Athenaean Literary Societies
  • The Student Handbook
  • Numerous photographs of students participating in various activities
